22 March - more Cold War





A timeline with some of the key Cold War events we've discussed.





Here are some excerpts from Obama's speech from his trip to Cuba. Note the stress on issues of politics (think free institutions and individual liberties) and economics (think free trade).




During the press conference, journalists were allowed to ask questions of both Presdient Obama and President Castro, even though this sort of journalistic freedom is not commonplace in Cuba. Castro was asked about political prisoners, which is a well-documented element of Cuba's history. His response:

To illustrate how close Cuba is to Florida, I noted that extreme swimmer Diana Nyad successfully swam from Cuba to Florida -- 111 miles (180 km.). The seas between Cuba and Florida are shark infested and full of nasty jelly fish. AND . . . she was 64 years old at the time. !!!!!
